Best SEO, GEO and AEO Tools in 2026 (UK & EU): Why We Run Ahrefs and Geogen Together Instead of Paying One Vendor for Both

Search has split in two. Classic SEO still runs on backlinks, keywords and technical health — and the tools that measure those haven't changed much. But a growing share of discovery now happens inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, where "ranking" means being cited or recommended in an answer. That is what GEO (generative-engine optimisation) and AEO (answer-engine optimisation) tools measure, and every SEO vendor has bolted something on — usually at a price. This comparison covers 11 tools across three classes: full SEO suites, the technical crawler everyone uses, and the new pure-play AI-visibility trackers. We judged them for a UK or EU buyer on price transparency in real currency, data depth, how well they work together (API and MCP access matters more every month), reliability, and what customers say on Trustpilot. Four of them — Semrush, SE Ranking, Ahrefs and Geogen — we tested ourselves, at length, before choosing.

Ahrefs + Geogen: the joint winners

We spent a long time testing four platforms — Semrush, SE Ranking, Ahrefs and Geogen — on pricing, how easy they were to work with, reliability and functionality, and settled on two of them running side by side.

Ahrefs is the SEO half. Its backlink index is the largest and freshest anywhere (35 trillion links, refreshed every 15–30 minutes), the keyword database covers 28.7 billion terms in 217 locations, and — the thing that matters if you automate anything — the REST API and a remote MCP server are included from the Lite plan (£99 month-to-month, about £82.50 on annual billing, with GBP pricing published for UK visitors). It is not perfect: the credit meter on lower plans catches people out, "suspicious activity" lockouts are the top Trustpilot complaint (2.1/5), and Brand Radar, its AI-visibility product, is sold as an add-on at roughly $199 per AI platform or ~$699 a month for all of them — two to three times the base plan, monthly-only unless you're on Enterprise. Brand Radar's prompt index is enormous, but the price is the reason we didn't buy it.

Geogen is the AI-search half. It does nothing but track how your brand shows up in AI answers — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, and unusually Claude, Mistral, DeepSeek and Qwen — with daily checks, share of voice, citation rate, sentiment, citations by domain, query fan-out analysis and AI-crawler tracking. It starts at €25 month-to-month or €20 on annual for a single entity, and every plan gets a documented REST API and an MCP server with write operations. It is a young Brussels company with no Trustpilot reviews yet and no published SLA, and it has no keyword, backlink or audit tooling at all — which is exactly why it fits next to Ahrefs rather than instead of it.

Put together: Ahrefs Lite plus Geogen Standard is roughly £150 a month for complete SEO and GEO coverage with APIs and MCP on both. Ahrefs alone with full Brand Radar is closer to £650. That gap, more than any single feature, is the verdict.

If you’d rather not run the tools yourself: two or three tools with APIs is great if you have someone to wire them together and act on what they say. If you don’t, our sister brand Fractional Teams runs a portal that pulls Ahrefs, Geogen and other sources into one consolidated view with a prioritised action plan — carry it out yourself, or hand it to their team to execute. Saaskly and Fractional Teams share an owner; we mention it because it is the “we’d rather someone else did this” answer to the question this article raises, not because it ranks anywhere here.

*How we calculate minimum commitment. Headline per-user prices hide the real cost of trying a platform. Total cost of ownership is licence × seats × term, plus usage, add-ons, setup fees and any early-exit charges. Our "minimum commitment" figure is the floor of that: the entry plan's committed rate × the minimum seats the vendor will sell × the months you must commit to (one month at the month-to-month rate where there is no commitment; the licence price where it is sold per year). It deliberately excludes usage, add-ons and prerequisite licences, so your real first bill will be higher — but never lower than this.

The rest of the field

Screaming Frog SEO Spider — the crawler you'll still need

Not a suite and doesn't try to be: it's the technical crawler you will still run alongside whatever else you pick. £199 a year per user (free to 500 URLs) from a UK company, JavaScript rendering, Lighthouse, GSC/GA/Ahrefs integrations, LLM-powered content analysis since version 22, and an official MCP server since version 24 (May 2026). No keywords, backlinks or AI-visibility — it's a crawler, and the best one.

SE Ranking — the value all-in-one

The closest runner-up in our own testing: GBP pricing outright (Core £95 or £76 annual), API included on every plan, daily rank tracking of 2,000 keywords, and the cheapest AI-search add-on per prompt (£69 for 200 prompts). It lost to Ahrefs on data depth, not on price or reliability, and its 4.3 Trustpilot is the best of the suites.

Peec AI — the EU-hosted GEO pick

Berlin-based, data on Google Cloud Ireland, six engines including AI Mode and Copilot on the $95 Starter, unlimited seats, MCP on every paid plan. The REST API is Enterprise-only and pricing is in dollars despite the EU base.

SISTRIX — UK plus continental Europe

Country indexes across 40 markets, EUR billing that cancels monthly (Start €119), and AI Overview and prompt tracking included on every tier with an MCP open to all plans. Backlink data is the weakest of the suites and the annual discount isn't published.

Otterly.AI — cheapest start on AI visibility

$29 a month for 15 prompts, no lock-in, API and MCP from the $189 tier — but Claude, Gemini and AI Mode are paid add-ons and it is a very small Austrian team.

Similarweb — competitor traffic

The best competitor-traffic estimates and AI-referral attribution here, an official MCP server, and a 4.4 Trustpilot — behind quote-only pricing and estimates that get shaky for small UK/EU sites.

Profound — enterprise AEO

$1bn valuation, 700+ enterprise customers, up to 11 engines and agentic content execution on Enterprise. Its self-serve tiers are deliberately thin — Starter tracks ChatGPT only — and data is hosted in the US.

Moz Pro — cheapest suite entry

$49 month-to-month, $39 annual, the home of Domain Authority, with an AI Visibility beta from the Medium plan. Limits are the tightest here, pricing is USD-only, the API is sold separately, and Trustpilot (2.4) is full of post-trial billing complaints.

Semrush: the one we tested and didn't choose

Semrush is the broadest suite on the market — a 43-trillion-link index, keyword and content tools, and since October 2025 "Semrush One" bundles that fold AI Visibility into the base plan from $199 month-to-month ($165 annual). The standalone AI Visibility Toolkit is only $99 a month, though 25 prompts is thin. It was in our four-way test and did not make the cut: on price (USD-only with VAT on top for UK/EU buyers, API only on Advanced and above), on how it felt to work with day to day, and on the combined toolset compared with Ahrefs + Geogen. That is our direct experience. Its Trustpilot is 1.7/5 from 1,372 reviews — charges during and after "free trials", deliberately hard cancellation, add-ons that keep billing after the base plan ends — the worst customer-review picture in this comparison.

Bottom line

  • Most UK/EU teams that want SEO and AI-search coverage with APIs: Ahrefs + Geogen. Best SEO data, cheapest credible GEO tracking, MCP on both, roughly a quarter of the cost of Ahrefs with Brand Radar.
  • Technical audits, whatever else you buy: Screaming Frog
  • One suite, GBP pricing, best reviews: SE Ranking
  • EU data residency for AI tracking: Peec AI · UK + continental Europe SEO: SISTRIX
  • Cheapest possible start on AI visibility: Otterly.AI
  • Enterprise AEO programme with budget: Profound
  • Prefer a managed, consolidated view: Fractional Teams' portal (our sister brand — disclosed above)
  • Semrush and Moz: capable, but read the Trustpilot pages before entering a card number
